House of the Week: An Elevated South Carolina Vacation Home

Rebuilding this elevated home on Sullivan’s Island cost the owners $5 million in 2017.

The owners salvaged design elements from the original 19th-century property, as well as from homes around the area

harlotte Artus and her husband, 65-year-old developer Alan Artus, purchased an elevated vacation home on Sullivan’s Island, S.C., for $2 million in 2013. The house, which dates back the 1800s, was rebuilt in the 1990s after sustaining damage from Hurricane Hugo.

Structural issues prompted the couple to rebuild again in 2017. Local craftsmen repurposed the home’s pilings into fireplace mantels, headboards and porch furniture. “The pilings that had been under the original cottage had been there for a century, so that wood was incredible,” says Charlotte, a London-based art adviser.
