How two brokers and an agent got stuck while showing homes

Q: Have you ever gotten stranded while showing a home?

I was representing some buyers and was showing them a 10-acre parcel of land. It was about 1,100 feet off a dirt road. The clients were in my truck, a Ford Expedition. It was spring and the ground was frozen, but the frost starts doing what they call “coming out of the ground,” and that makes the top of the ground muddy. I had my truck in four-wheel drive, and while driving I hesitated just the slightest bit, and we sank into the mud. The tires were spinning like crazy, so we tried to think of a way to get it out. We took pine branches and put them under the tires to give them some grip, but it didn’t work. I had to call an excavator because we were so far off the road that a regular tow truck couldn’t reach us. We were stuck there in the mud for about three hours until he was able to get there. The excavator actually drove a backhoe from his farm down the dirt road to find us. He started sinking too and had to use the claw on the front of the backhoe as support to drag himself and us out of the mud. I was pretty mortified at my stupidity because I should have known better. The clients were from a rural area, so they understood that mud can happen. And they didn’t buy the property, so all of that trouble didn’t result in a sale….
